SUMMARY:A Mayor's Vision for 100% Renewable Energy
DESCRIPTION:7:00pm\, Thursday March 22\n10C – 42 Carden Street\nCan David Mayberry’s vision work in Guelph? He has an idea for Oxford County – achieve 100% Renewable Energy by 2050. Mayberry\, County Warden and Mayor of the Township of South West Oxford sees this as a big economic driver while benefiting the environment in a big way. \nAnd in 2015 Oxford County Council adopted this goal for all of its energy needs including: electricity\, heating\, cooling\, and transportation. Situated in Southern Ontario\, Oxford is composed of eight municipalities – including Woodstock – with a population just under Guelph. \nThe event will showcase Oxford County Mayor\, David Mayberry\, along with Vice President of Advanced Planning for Alectra\, Neetika Sathe. For its part\, Alectra Utilities will soon take the place of Guelph Hydro. As Guelph joins several other municipalities under Alectra’s umbrella\, the growing utility provider will be creating a new green energy and technology centre locally. \nRegister on EventBrite HERE\n$10 in advance\n$15 at the door

SUMMARY:eMERGE Efficient Homes Tour 2017
DESCRIPTION:The eMERGE Efficient Homes Tour is just around the corner! Visit Guelph’s most efficient homes and explore the unique projects and retrofits homeowners have done to make their home first-class in energy efficiency and conservation. \n“The Efficient Homes Tour is an opportunity for residents to share their energy achievements and passion for environmental sustainability with the city” said Steve Yessie\, eMERGE Home Tune-Up advisor. Homeowners use many techniques to improve the efficiency of their homes\, ranging from high tech solar photovoltaic systems and top of the line heating\, ventilation and air conditioning systems to more basic work\, such as adding insulation and reducing drafts. \nThis year we are pleased to announce that we will be showcasing: \nThe Maitland Home – 36 Freshmeadow Way \nThe Maitland home doesn’t boast fancy new electronic equipment. In fact their thermostat isn’t even programmable. But they do keep a keen eye on energy and water use. Opting for slippers and sweaters in the winter\, owners keep their house temperature setting slightly lower\, during the day\, dropping it at night and when away. \nIn summer laundry is hung out back. In winter\, laundry is hung in the basement. Seldom is the clothes dryer used\, eliminating the electricity associated with one of the biggest energy using appliances in a house! \nThese good habits extend to behaviours through the day. From showers\, to washing dishes\, to lighting\, owners use what’s needed to keep happy and comfortable at home. \nWhile behaviour has been a key component to household utility use\, this 1993\, two story home has seen a handful of modest changes to go along with a well-planned extension. While improving insulation in household walls can be an expensive yet satisfying retrofit\, when considering beefing up the walls during a household extension\, the marginal added cost is insignificant to the benefit received. \nThe 250 square foot extension was considered with care\, and a contractor who knew their stuff (Braden Homes). The addition included beefed up insulation in the surrounding walls and the addition of insulation in attic spaces. Insulation was included under the foundation for a noticeable difference on the feet between the new and old construction. Of course serious attention was also given to air sealing. \nThe McAuley Home/Office – 360 Woolwich Street \nThis large 3\,000 square foot home AND office uses 36% less energy per square foot than the typical Guelph residence. It also out-performs the latest energy star rated homes. Pretty impressive\, right? \nWhat makes this space so efficient is not fancy technology or brand new upgrades. Instead retrofits completed 30 years ago focused on sealing and insulation. The end result: a quiet\, comfortable office space\, with 30+ years of lower bills. That’s a lot of money saved! \nCheck out some of the homes featured in past years HERE.

SUMMARY:Net Zero Energy in Community Halls and Places of Worship
DESCRIPTION:How a small community is seeing huge results in saving money\, energy and fighting climate change. \nEden Mills Community Hall \n7:00 pm Tuesday September\, 19\, 2017 \nEden Mills Community Hall \nEden Mills\, ON (12 kilometers east of Guelph) \n  \nThe Eden Mills Community Hall has undergone a renovation that has reduced their emissions by almost 80% and lowered energy use by more than 60%. And they’re not finished yet. This fall they are adding more exterior wall insulation that will further reduce costs and their impact on the environment. This year it will become a Net Zero Energy building. That is\, they have made their building so efficient that they can offset all of their energy needs by solar panels now installed on the roof. \nCommunity buildings like places of worship\, performance halls and meeting places\, provide a great opportunity for administrators to save money on energy\, reduce their impact on the environment and become examples for the broader society. \nEden Mills Community Hall has done just that. \nJoin eMERGE Guelph Sustainability and the Eden Mills community for an insider’s look at getting to Net Zero energy. \nThis is a free event\, however\, registration is necessary. Register HERE. \nA suggested donation of $10.00 at the door to help offset costs will be greatly appreciated \nThis is part of a series of events by eMERGE Guelph: \n100% Renewable Energy Guelph: building a roadmap to beat climate change
