In comparison we had over 90 people attend our event in October entitled ‘Talk… as if climate change matters’. Our goal is to make this health event just as successful.\n\n\nWe are working on rescheduling for the new year and will keep you informed as things progress.\n\nApologies once again.\n\n\n—————————————————————————————————-\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClimate change is hurting human health in Southern Ontario\n\n\neMERGE Guelph is hosting a series of events designed to help local environmental early adopters succeed in fighting climate change. We call the series: As if Climate Change Matters.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nHEALTH… as if Climate Change Matters \nWe have done a poor job communicating climate change to get real action. The ‘far off’ impacts have frequently made people feel as if sea level rise or flooding just couldn’t happen to them. \nThe reality is that Southern Ontario is already seeing the health impacts of climate change. We need to do a better job at communicating climate change. Now let’s learn about the local impacts. \n \n\nPegeen Walsh \nPegeen is the Executive Director for the Ontario Public Health Association. Her role requires supporting and facilitating advocacy efforts in public health and capacity building and knowledge transfer and exchange initiatives within the province and beyond. Prior to OPHA\, Pegeen has led the design and delivery of a wide range of programs\, policies\, partnerships\, and research that have supported individual and community health and well-being. As Ontario Regional Director with Health Canada\, the Public Health Agency of Canada and Director at the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion\, she oversaw various health initiatives ranging from early child development\, healthy eating\, and tobacco control\, healthy communities to injury\, alcohol abuse and 2008 OPHS Standards. As Director of Public Policy at YMCA Canada\, she developed government relations training and strategies. Just prior to joining OPHA\, Pegeen was a Research Director at the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships responsible implementing research strategy to advance knowledge and best practices. Pegeen is also a Board member at Family Services Toronto\, serving as chair of its Governance Committee. She is a certified Trainer from the Global Canadian Council and employs her knowledge in empowering women and youth to become more fulfilled and rewarded. \nAs the Sustainability Program Coordinator at eMERGE\, she coordinates the Home Tune-Up program by motivating residents towards small solutions that lead to huge savings on utility bills. \nAbout eMERGE\neMERGE Guelph fights climate change to build a healthy society. \nIt does this by helping people reduce energy and water use. These are your peers and can answer just about all of your questions. \n——————————————————————————- \n*Why is eMERGE pushing EVs?\nThere are many ways to fight climate change. \nBut when it comes to transportation planning our approach at eMERGE is quite clear.  Society has to take an approach that prioritizes 1) walking and then 2) cycling followed by 3) electrified public transit and finally 4) electrified personal transportation (cars). \nICE vehicles have no place in this century. The quicker we can take them off the road the better. Implementing transportation plans takes time and needs to be done properly. While the planning is ongoing\, we need to accelerate the switch to EVs. \nThere are a large number of people that are buying cars. Getting them to make the change to an EV gives us results now. Four tonnes per year in reduction of climate change pollution per household is significant. This approach buys us some time to keep pushing the envelope on transportation planning at the same time. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:A development in London\, Ontario\, is exceeding Guelph’s 2050 energy and sustainability goals today.  Could this be a vision for Clair Maltby and the Baker District? eMERGE wants to share this with you on February 19\, 2019. \nWest 5 is Ontario’s first Net Zero energy community integrated development that uses multi-use principles to create a walkable community that significantly reduces the impact of our daily lives on the environment.  What’s more\, these buildings cost significantly less to operate than conventional construction. DESCRIPTION:eMERGE  Guelph and Royal City Hero present: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBass guitarist\, Karen Farbridge\, is the 2019 Royal City Hero – Climate Change Edition. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile Karen has played in several garage bands over the years\, unfortunately none of them enabled her to make her real mark on climate change. Instead she’s made a profound impact on people and communities around the country – without becoming a rock star.\nShe went from grass roots organizing with her early work at OPIRG\, to a PhD in Zoology and then became the first female Mayor in Guelph. Visit Guelph’s most efficient homes and explore the unique projects and retrofits homeowners have done to make their home first-class in energy efficiency and conservation. \n“The Efficient Homes Tour is an opportunity for residents to share their energy achievements and passion for environmental sustainability with the city” said Steve Yessie\, eMERGE Home Tune-Up advisor. Homeowners use many techniques to improve the efficiency of their homes\, ranging from high tech solar photovoltaic systems and top of the line heating\, ventilation and air conditioning systems to more basic work\, such as adding insulation and reducing drafts. \nThis year we are pleased to announce that we will be showcasing: \nThe Maitland Home – 36 Freshmeadow Way \nThe Maitland home doesn’t boast fancy new electronic equipment. In fact their thermostat isn’t even programmable. But they do keep a keen eye on energy and water use. Opting for slippers and sweaters in the winter\, owners keep their house temperature setting slightly lower\, during the day\, dropping it at night and when away. \nIn summer laundry is hung out back. In winter\, laundry is hung in the basement. Seldom is the clothes dryer used\, eliminating the electricity associated with one of the biggest energy using appliances in a house! \nThese good habits extend to behaviours through the day. From showers\, to washing dishes\, to lighting\, owners use what’s needed to keep happy and comfortable at home. \nWhile behaviour has been a key component to household utility use\, this 1993\, two story home has seen a handful of modest changes to go along with a well-planned extension. While improving insulation in household walls can be an expensive yet satisfying retrofit\, when considering beefing up the walls during a household extension\, the marginal added cost is insignificant to the benefit received. \nThe 250 square foot extension was considered with care\, and a contractor who knew their stuff (Braden Homes). The addition included beefed up insulation in the surrounding walls and the addition of insulation in attic spaces. Insulation was included under the foundation for a noticeable difference on the feet between the new and old construction. Of course serious attention was also given to air sealing. \nThe McAuley Home/Office – 360 Woolwich Street \nThis large 3\,000 square foot home AND office uses 36% less energy per square foot than the typical Guelph residence. It also out-performs the latest energy star rated homes. Pretty impressive\, right? \nWhat makes this space so efficient is not fancy technology or brand new upgrades. Instead retrofits completed 30 years ago focused on sealing and insulation. The end result: a quiet\, comfortable office space\, with 30+ years of lower bills. And they’re not finished yet. This fall they are adding more exterior wall insulation that will further reduce costs and their impact on the environment. This year it will become a Net Zero Energy building.
